Navigating Change With a Return to Office

As we continue to navigate the ongoing changes in day to day life since the start of the pandemic it can feel challenging to return to the old ways of life that were likely drastically impacted, specifically work. With many offices reopening, it can feel overwhelming to return to (or start) the routine of going in person on a regular basis. Here are some strategies and considerations to help ease the challenges that can arise with big transitions:

1.     Remember – change can be tiring! Any time we are doing something new, our brain is working harder to process new information, make decisions, and navigate our surroundings. Even if you are returning to a familiar office space, you might find yourself feeling more tired than usual. Be kind to your body and try not to push yourself! Give yourself time and take opportunities to rest during big times of change. As you get more comfortable and familiar with your new routine, your body and mind will adjust, so remember that it’s a process, and it simply takes time. Remember, having patience with yourself is important!

2.     If working from home has been your norm for the past two years, it may feel distracting or over stimulating to be back in a busy, in-person office setting. If the constant buzz and chatter makes it difficult to get work done, try to set yourself up for success by utilizing tools to make your work environment more peaceful. Tools such as noise canceling headphones or white noise apps, scheduling time for quick walks or breaks throughout the day, and productivity methods like time blocking to prioritize your obligations throughout the day, can give you a sense of mastery and control even in a new environment!

3.     Prioritize self-care routines. One of the most important things the pandemic taught us is the value of taking time for self-care. Returning to the office may make it difficult to continue certain routines that were better suited for working from home. However, being creative and flexible with your self-care routines allows you to think about ways you can adapt your routines to fit your new schedule. 

4.     Allow yourself to process your feelings in response to change. Change can feel exciting, stressful, and uncomfortable all at the same time! It is perfectly normal to feel some resistance to change, so acknowledge your feelings, be compassionate towards yourself, and remember it takes time! Sometimes, saying that you feel uncomfortable out loud can help validate that you are experiencing the feeling.
