How To Keep Healthy Quarantine Habits

By: Brooke Phelps, LCSW

As we start to move away from covid restrictions towards more of a sense of normalcy that we had pre-pandemic, it is possible that many of us may spend time reflecting on how some of the changes quarantine brought on may be for the better. Habits that we formed out of necessity may have revealed healthy, productive, and adaptive ways to navigate our day-to-day. Here are some quarantine habits that may be worth keeping, even as the world returns to “normal.”

1.     Checking in on loved ones: When phone or virtual hang outs were all we had to stay connected, we realized the ease of keeping in touch with people near and far. Calling or facetiming family and friends has now become second nature, which can strengthen relationships and expand our communities in new, positive ways which are habits worth holding on to. Whether it’s group chats or evening catch-ups, keeping these habits will continue to allow you to feel connected to those who are not near-by.

2.     Setting and respecting boundaries: Asking for what we needed in order to feel safe, comfortable, and supported in a time of crisis, provided the ability to have more confidence asserting our needs in other situations, as well.  Setting boundaries that reinforce the importance of honoring our own values also encourages us to be mindful of others’ boundaries as we come to realize that boundaries are often less about feeling understood and more about feeling respected.

3.     Being selective with our time and energy: Many of us lived life in the fast lane prior to the pandemic, and while quarantine was certainly one of the most challenging adjustments we ever made, with time, it may have revealed the benefits of slowing down and appreciating the small things. Activities like going for a walk with a friend or sitting down with a great book are two simple ways to incorporate easy activities to remind ourselves to take a step back every once in a while. It remains important to be thoughtful about how we want to spend our time and energy during our down time. Giving yourself the time you need will ultimately allow you to be more present and focused.

4.     Maintaining self-care rituals: Many of us sought out new hobbies and rituals initially to help pass the time, but have since found genuine enjoyment in these activities as they had positive impacts on our mental health. Rituals like tending to plants, reading, meditating, walking, or journaling may have gone from ‘nice ideas in theory, to daily rituals that truly help us feel centered, healthy, grounded, and at peace.

5.     Tidying up: As many of us spent more time at home than ever before, we began prioritizing and optimizing our spaces. Starting or ending each day by tidying up lends itself to a sense of inner calm, preparedness, and instills a sense of pride in our adaptability, functionality, and safety in our space by allowing us to feel a sense of stability. If you haven’t been able to start this yet, give it a try! Challenge yourself to see if you can keep it up for 1 week and check in with yourself to see if you notice a difference in the way your space feels.
