How to Enjoy Valentine's Day Solo
By: Lexi Nass, LCSW
As Miley Cyrus says in her latest song, “I can buy myself flowers”. Let me start by saying, if you are single on Valentine’s day, you are certainly not alone. Whether you are single by choice (yes, that is absolutely OKAY), just got out of a relationship, are in the dating game, or are in a complicated “situationship” you can absolutely still enjoy Valentine’s Day.
It’s important to recognize and understand that being single on Valentine’s Day does not define who you are as a person. There is nothing wrong with being single on Valentine’s Day or any other day of the year. So, rather than focusing on being single, try to instead use this day as an opportunity to focus on YOU and do things that make YOU feel good.
Valentine’s Day can come with certain expectations, which can often lead to feelings of disappointment if those expectations are not met. A helpful way to manage your expectations is to consider your options. Realistically, there are two options- disregard the holiday and pretend it doesn’t even exist and enjoy the day as any other typical day in your life or use this day as an opportunity to make the most out of prioritizing YOU and doing things for YOU; you can even find a mix of both options! Whichever choice you decide on, with no right or wrong approach, just remember that this holiday is about love- and that definitely includes self-love.
Creating a plan for the day ahead of time will allow you to get excited and have something to look forward to. Whatever you choose to do, and whoever you choose to spend the time with, is entirely up to you - so make the most out of it! If you find yourself having a difficult time as the holiday approaches, or find yourself dreading this day because you think you can’t celebrate it the same way if you’re single, here are some tips to help yourself enjoy Valentine’s Day:
Host a dinner party for those who will be solo
Cook a new recipe you’ve been wanting to try
Take yourself out to your favorite restaurant
Spoil yourself – buy yourself flowers and a nice bottle of wine or box of chocolate
Buy yourself something that excites you
Plan a date night out with a friend - see a show or try a new restaurant
Enjoy a movie night alone or with friends - what could be better than popcorn, snacks, and a classic rom-com
Surprise your friends and send them Valentine’s treats
Have the ultimate self-care night - take a bath, light a candle, put on a face mask and put on chill music
Take a social media break - put your phone down and be present while enjoying an activity
Call or FaceTime with a friend or family that makes you feel good
Although Valentine’s Day has been represented as a romantic holiday, it is also just another day of the year. Try not to feel discouraged if you are single and instead, use the day as an opportunity to focus on prioritizing and enjoying the things you love a little bit more than a typical day.
